Has Beth Ditto fallen from her pedestal?

Beth Ditto is someone who I always thought was amazing! How could I not love a fat lesbian who doesn’t shave her armpits and is totally happy with who she is??

So I was somewhat distraught to see this post on threadbared, with an analysis of the photoshoot in NYLON; more specifically, the racist imagery that was used in it. As soon as I saw the photo it didn’t quite fit with me, and I think the post captures exactly why here:

Instead, the woman of color in her drab housekeeper’s uniform is simply another part of the furnishing in this bland motel room. She is banished as mere and muted background, the better to illuminate Ditto’s extraordinary excess of shine and glamor.
